Abraham Lincoln was a successful country lawyer in Illinois and also served the state as a captain in its militia, a legislator in its state government and represented the state in the United States House of Representatives. However, the most obvious achievement of Abraham Lincoln was being elected President of the United States of America in 1860. This established him as the first Republican president in American history. This victory was made even more significant as his election signaled the succession of southern states, soon to form the Confederate States of America and launch the nation into a bitter Civil War.

One of the many issues involved in the war was the issue of slavery. During his tenure, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which didn't exactly end slavery, but it helped to change the character of the Civil War. Once the Civil War had ended upon the surrender of the Confederacy to the Union, slavery was formally abolished in the United States with the addition of the Thirteenth Amendment.

Lincoln's leadership had helped to guide the nation through the greatest internal turmoil in its history and sustained the Union as a united body. In fact, in the midst of the chaos, he also helped to resolve international dilemmas, such as the Trent Affair in 1861, and managed his own reelection campaign in 1864-which he won.

Although not an achievement of merit, Abraham Lincoln holds the solemn status of being the first American President to be assassinated in office. The assassination would lead to greater security precautions and measures for the nation's elected figures in the future. Somewhat ironically, the Secret Service was on the verge of creation at the time of Lincoln's death, although it was intended originally as an initiative to combat counterfeiting rather than protect presidents (that would only occur after the death of another president, William McKinley in 1901).

His legacy continues and he has been named in countless political campaigns as an influence on the candidates' own views and political education most recently in Barack Obama's election as President of the United States in 2009. Comparisons had been made between the two men and their shared talent as orators and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is still taught to school children today.

Other achievements of note:

  • The President's recognizable image appears on the penny, the five dollar bill, the national landmark, Mt. Rushmore, and in his own memorial in Washington, D.C.
  • In 1862, he signed the Homestead Act which opened millions of acres of government-owned land in the West available for purchase
  • Lincoln oversaw the creation of the national bank system.
  • He approved the Pacific Railway Acts of 1862 and 1864 paved the way for the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad.
  • Lincoln remains the only person to ever both hold a patent and serve as President of the United States.
  • The president made Thanksgiving a standardized national holiday in 1863. His own birthday, February 12, was observed as a holiday in 30 states before it was combined with George Washington's birthday and celebrated nationally as President's Day in 1971.

Since your question is so general it is hard to list his achievements. We could start with him as President in 1861, the ability to manage a civil war from April 1861 to April 1865 and to run the government, the Gettysburg Address in 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation, and many other things he accomplished.
