They lost independent government and had to suck up the North to let them back in. It wasn't all that bad though, many civil rights legilations were passed against slavery and the citizenship of blacks. Except that Southern white supremacists hated that... The South was financially crashed. Not that they were that better off before, but the expenses made in order to carry on the war placed them in a bad financial situation. It took them quite a while to recover.
