Normally the way the Plumbing on a pool works, You have the

  1. The Skimmerbox all the water that comes from your pool to be filtered goes through the skimmebox. then you have the pipes that take the water to the skimmer box, sometimes water is also taken through a special opening in the spa if there is one attached.
  2. other plumbing that goes to the pool are the returns from the filter and possibly to and from the heater if there is one.
  3. last but not least at the very lowest part of the pool there is what is known as a hydrostatic valve. this is there to allow ground water that has built up under the pool to be released into the pool when it is empty. this stops the pool from coming up out of the ground.

What is the Purpose of a main drain in a swimming pool?

If its not connected through the skimmer I imagine it's there to empty it. hmmm, on the above. The main drain in pools is for circulating the lower part of the pool and is not intended to drain the pool as in a bath tub.

Does skimmer location matter on an in ground pool?

Yes it can make a big difference to the amount of floating debris and dust that sinks into your pool. The ideal place for the static skimmer in a pool is down stream from the return jets (These are the jets that return filtered water to the pool) and down wind from the prevailing winds, this can be a bit more difficult to work out as the wind direction over a pool is strongly influenced by the building surrounding it. The fact is that very few pool builders get it right. if the skimmer ends up in the wrong position there is always the option of using a floating swimming pool skimmer skimmer. this type of skimmer is set to the suction of the pools filtration system and connected via hose to the vac plate over the leaf basket, It can be fastened in place or left to float free in the pool and will keep working regardless of water level, Check out the link below on floating skimmers

How do you use the bottom drain in an in ground pool?

Well, if you mean to drain the pool --- it is not a drain as in house plumbing -- the sink -- the tub. It is connected to the skimmer and that is connected to the pump. Your main drain is most likely 'working'. It does not nave to be a strong flow. Well, if you mean to drain the pool --- it is not a drain as in house plumbing -- the sink -- the tub. Difference of a pool skimmer and pool filter?

A pool skimmer is generally built into the side of or around the top of a swimming pool in order to skim debris from the surface of the water. A pool filter is built into the plumbing in order to filter fine debris from the water itself.
