Historians agree that this was only true for some, mostly in the Union. The South had lost its position as the #1 provider of cotton to the world, as Egypt and India had taken over their markets during the Civil War. And with that, the South lost its major source of prosperity. The result was a plunge into poverty for the South that would in many places last until after WW2.

The black slaves were now free, but with their countries ravaged and poor and their skills no longer in demand with the cotton industry gone, their freedom also cost them the 'free room and board' of slavery, cynical as that may sound. Many if not most of them had to live a life of (still) second-class citizenship and poverty. Racism died only very slowly in the South, fed by resentment of southern whites that black emancipation had cost them their many dead and their prosperity. Things like laws forbidding 'mixed' marriages would remain in place - and be actively enforced - in many Southern states until well into the 1960s.

So all in all, the Civil War's result was a boost to Northern industries and a century-long economic slump for the South.

Yes it did, because in the past, the U.S. had slavery. So they had the Civil War to end slavery, which it did when the War ended on My 10, 1865.
