I've heard my cat make "barking" noises when he is unable to obtain something. I think it is a sign of frustration for them. My cat will make the noise while following a laser pointer around the room or if there is a window blocking him from a bird or squirrel outside of his reach. It is the same reason why we as humans swear or grunt when we are frustrated. Hope this helps. :0

The theory is that the dog will learn soon the barking is bad, but most of the time, a dog will not make this connection between barking and the noise.
