The brake pedal has to be fully depressed for the stick to engage.
it just resets the shift points on the trans. it allows you to hold a gear a little longer.
Take out the transmission and there it is. The flywheel holds the ring gear for the starter. If your ring gear has been obliterated by your starter you have an issue with how the starter engages the fly wheel to begin with. Proper clearances, alignment and securing of your starter will make your trooper whole agian.
2.6 Isuzu engine is not an interference engine; in other words, if the timing belt breaks or cam gear locating pin shears, the valves will not collide with the pistons

The Isuzu NPR uses 85W140 gear oil in the differential and you can use chevron starplex 2 grease when greasing the chassis.

The belt itself is rubber and wouldn't have a mark. The mark is usually at the top of the engine and one on the upper belt gear that when they are facing one another means your on the money.
Are you familiar with a Trooper with an automatic transm. with torque on demand, slamming into gear while up shifting and downshifting? Here is an update , which I'm sure you would be interested in. It seems, as long as I squeeze deliberately on the shift button while placing into gear which should cause none of the loose U-Joint sound as I described previously, then I have no problems. In other words: if there is a clunk sound when in engaging into gear, stop, and re-do, until no noise is detected and a smooth, seamless transition into gear is achieved. I have not had another incident since. UPDATE: I have been told the cause is a dirty or wet, range mode switch, which is attached directly below the shifter.

Check the fluid level. If it is full you have a more serious problem.
I have had shift problems with my trooper and eventually traced it to low battery voltage, ie failing battery or alternator, they record faults on the onboard trans computer also, so maybe a trip to the local agents and ask them to download the transmission faults and see if this helds your diagnosis in any way.
Simple answer is take it to an auto transmission shop. They have all the gear and replace the gasket and internal filter for little more than it would cost for the bits. I gave up doing this years ago.
