Hernando de Soto was buried in the Mississippi River. His body was placed in a coffin that was weighed down and sunk in the river as a way to conceal his death and prevent his body from being desecrated by Native Americans.

Hernando De Soto (1496-1542) was a Spanish explorer, a conquistador who gained riches as part of Pizarro's conquest of the Incas of Peru in 1533. He was rewarded with the governorship of Cuba and a royal charter to colonize North America.
His expedition traveled to Florida from Cuba in 1539, and explored much of the Gulf Coast and what is now the southeastern US, from the Carolinas west into Texas. He died in southern Arkansas or northern Louisiana in 1542. He is considered to be the first European to see and cross the Mississippi River.
