They became Allies. The spanish gave money to the U.S to supported them.
When the news of Saratoga had arrived, Benjamin Franklin pointed out that it was now time for an alliance. Americans had proved they could win battles and carry their own weight.
So, the Treaty of Alliance was signed in February 1778. Three months later France entered the war. France's ally Spain joined as well. What had started as a spat between Britain and its colonies had become an international war.
While Franklin was still in France, in addition to money and arms, Franklin sent soldiers from Europe to America that were willing to fight.
It was in 1779 that Spain joined the patriots against the British. Spain gave the Americans loans. Spain did not help the Patriots directly, but they attacked British interests and threaten Britain itself. This caused Britain to separate even more widely. This made the military as well as navy forces to thin out in some areas. Spain also sent the Patriots weapons along with the French.
They saw that France had allied with the patriots and knew that the Patriots had a chance of winning.

Spain really didn't have a reason, and they didn't help until the end. It was mostly the French's help, however minor it was. (Battle of Saratoga and Yorktown.)
