Why slavery was good?

Economically, slavery was a boon to many. First, African tribesmen captured other blacks and sold them to European slave traders. The capturers benefited financially from these transactions by receiving gold, silver, weapons, etc... The slave traders loaded up shiploads of slaves and sold them to slave owners, receiving money in return. The slave owners benefited from slave labor for the life of the slave without having to pay a salary.

Why didn't slaves get any money?

I'm guessing your talking about Black American slaves due to the category this question is on. In a way you have answered your own question. By definition a slave doesn't get paid, however what they do get is shelter, food and the natural essentials. The reason why slaves didn't get paid is because they were seen as being less than human (3/5 of a white man by the US constitution), so they didn't need money. They didn't really have anything to buy, the only real thing they would spend any money on would be alcohol. Slave owners wanted cheap labour, they provided slaves with the bare minimum to keep them alive and nothing more. Hope this has helped, Cpl.Vadera

How did southern slave owners rationalize the practice of slavery and suggest it was a good thing?

Southern slave owners used various justifications for slavery, such as claiming it was necessary for the economy and that slaves were inferior beings who needed guidance and discipline. They also believed that slave labor was key to maintaining their way of life and that it was a means of civilizing and Christianizing the enslaved population. Additionally, some slave owners argued that they were providing their slaves with food, shelter, and "protection," which they believed made them better off than if they were free.
