Since the end of WWII, the US introduced a lot of reformations into Japan in such fields as education, human rights, farm land liberation, advancement of women and so on. Japan as it is today owes much to these revolutionary US actions.
You can see the influence of Japan in various areas of American culture. The first to come to mind, most likely, is food. Japanese restaurants (particularly sushi and teppanyaki) have become common sights. The fact that many American grocery stores have sushi chefs on hand (or sell prepackaged sushi) is a testament to the degree to which it has become a part of our own food culture. For many, what used to be an exotic dish is now old hat.
Second, Japanese fashion has for some time now influenced styles on the runways in Europe and the United States. Labels like Commes des Garconnes, A Bathing Ape, and the brand Uniqlo have stores in the United States and are increasing in popularity.
Cartoons are also quick to come to mind when thinking of recent examples of Japanese culture's influence on America. Japanese 'anime' has enjoyed ever increasing popularity, starting with a few networks broadcasting a show now and then to entire channels devoted to it. One need only remember the Pokemon craze a few years back for an example of Japanese culture in America.
Japanese cars and electronics are prolific in America.
Pop culture has certainly seen the bulk of influence; the novelty of "Harajuku Girls" in mainstream music, the popularity of Japanese motifs in videos, "Hello Kitty" and other Sanrio toys, Karaoke, various Martial Arts, movies, etc.
In more recent times, through Japanese history films as well as anime, manga, and J-music. However, is is more apparent that American cultural Imperialism is larger in Japan than Japanese cultural imperlialism is in the United States.
