The acquisition of overseas territory affected the way the United States viewed its role in the world by realizing it can spread its wings much wider

Although the US did not expand overseas to the extent of the European world powers, it did give the country a closer view of the results of building huge empires that in many ways took advantage of lessor developed civilizations.

In contrast to the first exploring nations to the Western Hemisphere, the US did not come close to building vast colonial empires that existed well into the 20th Century. America's view of the world was not unlike some of the views of its allies and/or other European powers. The huge difference was the size of European acquisitions. As time passed, many of the European world powers became, within themselves, more democratic nations. This however, did not always spill over to the way that Europeans treated the political policies of its colonies. Few colonial empires simply faded away. In many cases it took bitter conflicts for developing nations to be set free.
