The first indication is usually drips under the car under the front center. I have found they will usually drip for a long time before they fail. If you crawl under the front of the engine with a flashlight and look up under the harmonic balancer, you will be able to see the coolant seeping out. As the bearings worsen, the seal gets worse and the rate of the leak flow increases until eventually you have a major leak and overheating issues. On a 1978, it probably needs replacing anyway. Waterpumps are cheap for these cars, I got one with a lifetime warrenty (a good idea since they last about 4 or 5 years) for under $30. They are also fairly easy to install. Last weekend we replaced the water pump on my friends Chrsyer 300M which requires removing the fron engine cover, timing belt, etc.
Good luckvbdenny
you would need a tool which is called a pressure tester, if you see a leak from the water pump during the test then your water pump is bad and need to be replaced a.s.a.p
If the water pump is driven by the same accessory belt as the power steering pump it could affect the ps pump.
low fluid, bad thermostat, cooling fans are not coming on,bad water pump
It is rare for a water pump not to work however a water pump going bad will leak coolant and can be noisy from bad bearings.
It will leak if it is broken
Two different problems. You need to pay more attention to basic engine maintenance.
If it is stealing stuff.
what if my top radiator hose is very hot and the bottom hose is cold, would that be a bad water pump?
In most cases the water pump will start to leak coolant when it is going bad.
It is important to know the symptoms of when a car part goes bad. The symptoms of a bad auto water pump are overheating, weeping, and grinding gears.
If it is leaking water, it is bad.
Noisy, leaking from the weep hole on the bottom of the pump, or engine overheating.
