To use the Extended ASCII characters, you'll need to hold down the ALT key on the keyboard, hit a combination of numbers on the num pad on the right side of the keyboard, then release ALT. ƒ is created by holding ALT and pressing 1 then 5 then 9, and releasing the ALT key. There is a complete list of the characters you can add available here: http://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.htm

Use the character map - found by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. The character map is a complete list of all characters the computer is capable of displaying. You simply select the relevant letter(s) and use copy & paste to put them in any other document.

There are two easy ways:

  • The easiest way to make accent marks is to open your character map. Go to the start menu and search for character map. All Windows computers have this program. Then you just click on the character you want, copy it, and paste it into your document. The character map will give you every possible character, including all alphabets plus thousands of Chinese characters
  • use the Alt key concept. You just hold the ALT key and type numbers corresponding to the accent that you want. For example:

ALT + 3 gives ♥

ALT + 0233 gives é

Here are some common accent marks for Spanish:

Hold the alt key and type:

0225 = á

0233 = é

0237 = í

0243 = ó

0250 = ú

0241 = ñ

On a regular QWERTY keyboard, vowels can be typed with accents by holding AltGr (Alternate Graphic) and pressing the letter keys normally.

Special characters can also be typed using Alt-codes, which involves holding the normal Alt key and pressing corresponding numbers on the numpad. There are lists of these combinations on the internet.

There are several different ways to make letters with accent marks, or other special symbols such as emdashes or ellipses. If you are using a Windows computer, the simplest method to enter a symbol occasionally is to open the Character Map tool from the Accessories -> System Tools sub-menu of your Start Menu. This tool will allow you to scroll through all the different possible letters, select them, and copy them for pasting into your document.

As you mouse over the special characters, you might notice they have a three- or four-digit code number associated with them. If you memorize or write down the code numbers of characters you use often, you can enter those characters using the Alt key plus your numeric keypad. To make the letter "a" with an acute accent mark, for example, you could hold ALT and hit 0225. (This only works with the numeric keypad, not the number keys at the top of the keyboard.) You can find a list of these codes here.

In Linux, special characters are entered via a different set of codes called Unicode. In systems that use GNOME or GTK, you would press Ctrl + Shift + U and then enter the four-digit hexadecimal code. To produce a letter "a" with an acute accent mark, you would press and release Ctrl + Shift + U and then type 00E1. You can look up Unicode codes here. Also, some Linux distributions have their own character map application, which works similar to the Windows application.

Entering letters with accent marks under Macintosh OS X is more complicated. Rather than entering codes for each letter, you use option codes to apply accent marks to particular letters. For example, to add an acute accent mark to the letter "A", you would hold and release the Option and E keys, then press A. A complete list of option shortcuts can be found here. OS X also has a "Character Viewer" similar to the Character Map application. To open it, choose Edit -> Special Characters from your current application.

It depends on the type. On a Mac, you press and hold "Option," then "N." You'll see a accent in highlight. Then choose the letter you want to use.

Why don't Spanish irregular verbs have accent marks?

Irregular verb forms can have accent marks (such as "fuéramos" which is a form of the verb "ser.") Accent marks aren't used to show whether words are regular or irregular. The accent in "fuéramos" shows that the syllable with "e" gets the stress.
