(1) Wind down the window glass. (2) Bend one piece of stiff steel wire into the form of a small hook like the letter L with the lower portion only about 8 mm long. (3) Unscrew and remove the lock. (4) Use a electric light bulb of at least 60 W and look into the locking mechanism from above the two trims. (5) There is one piece of steel button hanging from the locking mechanism. You insert the steel hook and turn it 90 degree so that it can engage with the steel button of the locking mechanism. (6) Pull the button up and the lock will be released. This is not that difficult. (7) If you cannot locate the steel button, you should try to remove the fabric of the other door and locate the release button so that you know where to look for the release button.
How do you remove the driver side door panel of a 1998 VW Beetle to replace the door handle cable?
You will need a torx head screw driver and a Phillips screw driver, remove the screws around the closing handle and the opening handle, then gently pry at the bottom of the panel to pop the fasteners loose working your way up the sides, lift the panel out of the the window slot and over the door opening handle.
Remove the screws from the handle and then the door panel will slide up. It has clips that will only let it slide up
remove small round plastic cap behind inside door handle, remove the screw, remove screws from door panel edges, starting at the bottom..pull the panel straight off the door. a door trim tool (if available) may be used to release the clips behind the panel
remove the screws that are around the side and bottom of panel. remove covers located by mirror and by the door hinge. remove the screws you found use a small bent screw driver and put it in the hole on the underside of the the close handle to push the cover off the handle. remove these two screws remove the screw behind the door open handle. pop off the cover that is over the mirror mechinism. now pull up on the panel and voila!
