i just set the timing on my 91 tercel... i also have the 3EE engine... difference may be that mine was SOHC and yours might be DOHC... your best bet is to spend $15 at autozone or advanced auto and pick up a HAYNES book for your year car.... it will have the timing marks and everything that you will need to know about fixing the timing... any kind of "timing" work should be done by a pro or someone with plenty of knowledge... one tooth off and the car will not run... it has to be EXACT, AGAIN IT HAS TO BE EXACT or you risk the chance of losing your gas mileage or even performance... hope i helped....

The timing setting for a 1988 Toyota Tercel is the "3E" hole lines at the top. This setting is for a Tercel EZ 1500 engine.
a 93 tercel which most likey has a the stock 3e-e engine doesnt have an egr system.
The timing marks are on the lower timing belt sprocket on the main crank. It's a small notch you can match it with the pointer on the oil pump casing. The top mark for a 3e engine is on cam sprocket in the 12 o'clock position. It has a hole you can look through to see the notch.
any engine from the toyota family with a e in it for example a 4e-fe or a 3e-te or a 5e-fe BIGG ZIGG
CRANK GEAR, FIND THE ARROW ON THE BLOCK AT ABOUT THE 2 O'CLOCK POSITION AND LINE IT UP TO THE NOTCH ON THE GEAR, MAKE SURE THE NUMBER ONE PISTON IS AT TOP CAM GEAR, THERE ARE TWO NOTCHES ON THE HEAD FOR THE CAM GEAR, YOUR 3E ENGINE SHOULD MATCH UP TO THE 12 O'CLOCK DOT LOOK THROUGH THE HOLE FOR THE 3E MARK AND LINE IT UP KEEP TENSION ON THE TIMING BELT AS YOU PUT IT ON COUNTER CLOCKWISE.
rod bearing Toyota tercel 87
You can find the freeze plug (opening for the Block Heater in Canadian versions) just behind the headers (exhaust pipes leaving the engine) on the left hand side.(facing the engine) At least on my 1992 Toyota Tercel. Engine code 3E-E.
Use the Autozone online repair manual. This is the link I use to access the Toyota Tercel info for a 3E engine. http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1b/79/03/0900823d801b7903/repairInfoPages.htm
How to check valve clearance on 3E Toyota engine
I use thew16exr-u11 on my 1991 toyota tercel 1500cc 3E-E enginethe gap is .035
yeah. if your wanting to turb it check the compression levels first in the 5e block.
exhaust and intake. that is a rule of thumb for most cars though. the better they can breathe, the better off they are. other then that tercel's were never designed to be performance vehicles anyway. there are many ways to add horsepower though. personaly the 3e is in my opinion a waste of time. i did a 4efte swap into a 91 and was very pleased with the finsihed product. i would do an engine swap with one that has alot more support for things like this. the 3e isn't going to give you much of that.
