Blitzkrieg was a tactical system developed by the Germans. The word literally means "lightning war". It was new and completely revolutionary. The essence of it was that tanks, instead of being spread out and used just to support infantry, would be concentrated in large columns. The tanks would attack and break through the enemy line. they would then spread out in the enemy rear areas destroying supplies and ammunition and capturing command posts and headquarters, thus paralyzing the front lines so they could be easily attacked by the infantry. They called it blitzgrieg because the tanks spreading out behind the lines looked, on a map, like the branches of a bolt of lightning. To see how effective this was look at how easy the German victories were in the early part of the war. They defeated Poland in six weeks, Denmark in a single day, Holland in a few days, Belgium in a couple of weeks and France in six weeks. They conquered vast amounts of Russia in a matter of weeks. Eventually though their enemies learned how to use the same tactical system and applied it against them. When the tide turned and British, American and Russian armies began to advance they were using essentially the same ideas. Modifications of the blitzkrieg arew still used by advanced armies today.Michael Montagne

super duper effective.Germany took over almost all of Europe before they knew what hit them.look at a map dude

Answerblitzkrieg or lightning war was developed in Britain in the 1930s as a what if scenario and thought to not be effective by Countries like Britain and France due to the fact that infantry is left to far behind the forward tank units and at that time they beleived the tank to be an infantry support weapon, Germany and Russia both adopted it because they used tanks as spearheads with infantry supporting them, Russia and Germany had a different attitude towards tank and infantry battle deployment which is why both Countries used Blitzkrieg so effectively they understood how to use it tactically. Sometimes people forget Russia and Germany actually had very similar ideas as far as tank inf and airforce deployment, and actually worked together before the war on tank developement they both new they would have major problems if they ever faced each other in battle, Hitler was hoping that their infrastructure would calapse before they could get themselves organised or stalins purges would render the Russian military ineffective, but Germany always new Russian tanks and tactics could be a problem that's why 80% of the German army was deployed there.

Yes, the blitzkrieg battle tactic was very effective, but only in offensive operations. Once the Nazis were on the retreat, then it did them no good.
