try a tune up, make sure valve cover gasket is not leaking into #4 spark plug tube, check spark plug wires and coil.
Change spark plugs and wires... TUNE-UP...
between the 2nd and 4th cylinder3rd hole over from passenger side of vehicle.
the 4th one in line.
bad spark plug, bad spark plug wire, spark plug gap out of specs..then maybe coil to the back 2 spark plugs. The thing i have found recently ,i guess because of age of vehicles, the valve cover inner gaskets leaking oil into spark plg tubes. this causes all kinds of wierd problems. If you pull out spark plug wire and it comes out all covered in oil ,that is your problem. of coures you could be having other issues with #4, but generally speaking, keep it simple, like tune up ,or compression test to find a leaking head gasket, etc.
A 4.0 Jeep is a six cylinder. The 4th cylinder would be the 4th one from the front. #1 is the closest to the radiator, #6 is the farthest from the radiator.
#4 cylinder is on the passenger side back.

I have a 97 escort lx wagon and recently I got the #4 cly. misfire after replacing the wires and plug's misfired again causing the check engine light to come on,had it checked at the auto parts store and got the #4 cyl. misfire.replaced the dist. cap.still had problems, took it to Bob Lees auto repair and the engine went south on a test drive.Busted piston!!! . probably a timing belt problem!!!!!
Without knowing what engine and year, we can't say for certain; however, the 99-02 V6 cougars were know to be picky about what spark plugs and wires they used, as well as needing new coil packs every 60k miles or so. Could be that, I think that are on opposite banks, aren't they?
