Gmail now has a feature in 'Settings' where you can force SSH encrypted pages each time you load gmail. This makes it harder or hackers to find holes into your account. Any email account is at risk. The strength of your password is key to keeping your account secure.

I'm sorry but I do not agree to the above answer. It was expected that someone with knowledge with Hotmail and not in the sense of a user but someone who knows how it operates internally and can show that indeed it is secure. The question relates to security of using hotmail as well as reliable.

At present I have not found the answer to this question but I thought I should waste my time here just like the person who gave the answer above. The real point is why did you even bother answering the question which was in no way reasuring to its security.

Reliability is the second problem you look at since people want their e-mails to be secure. Otherwise any one can just snoop. Back in the late 1990's it was possible to trick users into signing into a computer terminal which had been set up with a program to monitor that terminal as well as recording the username and password. This then allowed anyone to place a floppy disk in the computer which would automaticaly read the disk and load a program. Boy didn't it take us long to realise how open the computers were back then.

Now they were able to see the username and password which was typed into the hotmail account. Basicaly allowing remote monitering which is very big at the moment. Windows encourages you to use it having it activated on set up. This then leads to an harchiles heel which allows hackers to breach the software and remotely view what you are doing from any where in the world.

securtiy is the priority not the reliability.

Depends.

GMail is secure for home use. I wouldn't worry about Google's servers getting hacked although it's possible. Make sure that you are on a secure WIFI or directly plugged in at home, otherwise it's similar to being in a WIFI cafe.

The issue of security comes into play when you are using GMail in a public place where you are on the same wireless network with any would-be hackers that desire to break into your account.

The best way to secure GMail is by requiring GMail to always use an https (http w/ security) connection. This can be done by going into GMail from home (b/c it isn't secure yet), and on the Settings page under the General tab click the "Always use https" option. This option persists between sessions (eg if you reboot, GMail will still know to go to a secure connection the next time you check your mail).

Another method of accomplishing the same thing on a one-time basis (good way if you find yourself in a wifi cafe) is by opening the GMail page using https as opposed to http. This will tell Google to run GMail using a secure connection this one time.

When you choose the "Always use https," then Google will switch the http to https automatically forcing the connection to be secure.

Note that GMail always uses a secure connection for the authentication (ie logging in) process but then they switch by default to an unsecure connection for the actual transfer of data / emails. This is what is unsecure with GMail.

Personally I Think Gmail Is Faster And All My Friends Use It!

Although When Your Making Your Gmail account You Have To Give Over Your Cell Phone Number Which I Think Is Stupid!

But emails can be tagged making search much more effective. Gmail also offers more storage and other features, and it's free.

However, Hotmail offers more mainstream Outlook-like user interfaces

So If Your Looking For A Quick Easy Using Email account Go For Gmail!
