Most of them ended up working in foundries and steel mills in Western Pennsylvania and other areas of Eastern US 'coal country.' They were seen as exotic, 'ethnic,' inscrutable, superstitious, and were 'othered' by Anglo-Saxon and Germanic Americans as early as the 1870s.
