I was told all you have to do is take the tensioner off, replace belt then put the tension back on. The tensioner is spring/hydraulic & self adjusting. I cannot figure out which pulley is the tensioner. Chevy (www.helminc.com) sells a two-volume repair manual for $125. Haynes sells a repair manual for $25 (www.haynes.com) but I have yet to find one at an auto parts store or in a public library. If anyone has this manual available maybe they can help us out. On the passenger side of the engine compartment you will find the tensioner spring. This spring is connected to a bracket which connects to the tensioner pully. In the middle of this bracket is a 3/4 inch nut that is welded to the bracket.Get a wrench or socket on this nut and turn towards the front of the car, this will take the tension off so you will have to hold it while you slip the belt off. When installing new belt run it around all the pullys except for the tensioner pully. Now release the tension again by turning the nut forward and slip the belt around the tensioner pully. Release your tension on the nut and wah la, its done. I found out it is a good idea to draw a picture of the way the belt winds around all the pullys before taking off the old one. I saved approximately 150 dollars and it took only about a half hour to do his by myself, so good luck!
Go to your Chevy dealer parts department; they can print a copy for you.

what are the correct steps to remove the serpentine belt that runs to the alternator on a 2001 Toyota AvalonWas that an ANSWER!? I assume the question is, "How do I remove and replace the serpentine belt on a 2001 Toyota Avalon". (You can remove it with a good sharp knife!)
Remove serpentine belt. Unbolt old pulley. Install new one & serpentine belt.
It is squealing because it is loose or worn out. Tighten it and if that does not help, replace it. If it is a serpentine belt, just replace it and check to make sure the idler tensioner is working properly.
