The French language has its roots in Latin. Here is a bit of history that will explain its origins. From about 500 BC to 476 AD, the Roman Empire expanded to include much of the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The lands correspond to the the countries we now know as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, the Greek Isles, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and all of North Africa over to GIbraltar. (I'm sure I left out a few countries - but the idea is that it surrounded the whole Med. Sea.) During the years that the Empire occupied all these lands, Latin became the common language uniting all the conquered peoples of those lands. When the Roman Empire fell (476 is a date many scholars agree on), there was no longer any mighty Roman presence to continue to govern or defend these peoples, let alone to unite them, and the various parts of the Empire splintered into their own smaller cultural groups. This was the beginning of the dark ages, a time when folks lived in much smaller circles, with little contact outside their own small feudal kingdoms. The continued to speak Latin, but because each group became more isolated from the others, the Latin that they spoke developed into different languages, which we now call the Romance languages (from Roman, not from romance). Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Catalan, and Romanian all have their roots in Latin, and each is closely related to the others.
