More people lived in the North, more industry, more railroads, and the Union had a Navy, the South had a few small ships also almost half the population of the south of were blacks and why would they fight against the Union.

----

Actually, the Union was at a great disadvantage at the outset of the Civil War. Many of the strongest forts were in the south or on confederate controlled land. It didn't take long for the confederates to isolate and starve out, ultimately taking the forts.

John B. Ford was Secretary of War (1857-1860) under James Buchanan. Ford issued orders in late 1860/ early 1861 which sent the majority of the Union Army to the western frontier on several actual and pretended Indian campaigns. It wasn't until late 1861 or early 1862 that the army knew about the outbreak of the war, and it was months later that they finally received orders from Secretary of War Simon Cameron to come to the defense of the nation.

Isaac Toucey was Secretary of the Navy (1857-1860) under James Buchanan. Toucey issued orders in late 1860/ early 1861 which sent the majority of the Union Navy to the Mediterranean and North Seas and West Africa on pretended anti-piracy and anti-conscription patrols. Most of the Navy, at the time, received communications from other ships when they made port, or messages left in the port by other ships. Most of the Union Navy was on its way home months after the April shelling of Fort Sumter.

When the ships of the Union Navy arrived home they found many of the important ports blockaded by the confederate Navy. In many ways, the confederate Navy was trapped between Union forts and the Union Navy, making them useless for a period of time.

The advantages of the Union were the size of the Army that they were able to assemble, the ability to feed an army in the field, the size and efficiency of the railroads, the ability to move troops from one area to another quickly, and the size and production of the industrial might of the North.

The Union had an economy based on industry and agriculture, so it could produce and replace its own artillery and its own food. However, the South had no industry, so instead of making it's artillery, it would buy it from Europe. However, it would eventually run out. Also, the Union had more people than the Confederacy.
