Like elements, molecular motion determines a substance's phase (solid, liquid, gas), usually in response to an increase or decrease in temperature.
Molecules can form or be broken down by chemical reactions. Reactions that form larger molecules are synthesis reactions, and reactions that break down molecules are called decomposition reactions. Sometimes substances will exchange or swap atoms, in what is called a substitution reaction, which creates different molecules and may release some free elements.
