It is believed by scientists that the oldest city in the world is Jericho which is located in the Palestinian Territories. It has been continuously inhabited since 9,000 BC.
Damascus is considered by many to be the oldest city.

  • G·bal/Býblos/Dzhubajl/Giblet (see Byblos), L·banon, Cànqhàn/Ppœnicè: 6230 BCE; 4500 BCE; 3000 BCE
  • Eridug/Iritu/Tall -àbu Shàhrajin (see Eridu), Cengir/Shumeru/Sumr, Calam/Càqhsum/Qhirààq: 5400 BCE; 4000 BCE; 2900 BCE

As a place of human habitation, the term city is a bit flexible. There is no reliable definition when considering habitation sites with ancient roots. An ancient "city" could have had 10,000, 1,000, 100, or 10 inhabitants. With this in mind, the traditional ideas of "Old World" and "New World" gets a bit muddled. There is archeological evidence that identifies sights of human habitation over extended periods in the Western Hemisphere. Three of the oldest are below:

Many cities claim to be the world's oldest continuously inhabited city. However, Jericho is the only one of these cities to have evidence to support its claim, as Jericho was inhabited as far back as 9,000 BC.
