The night before Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, he delivered his 'I've Been To The Mountaintop ' speech, which some believe predicted his death. Although King's killer, James Earl Ray, initially confessed, he subsequently attempted to change his plea and get a new trial, claiming someone named 'Raoul' paid him to kill King.

King was shot at 6:01 p.m. April 4, 1968 he was standing on a motel's second floor balcony. The bullet entered through his cheek smashing his jaw and then traveled down his spine before lodging in his shoulder. According to Jesse Jackson who was present, King's last words were to Ben Branch a musician who was scheduled to play that night at an event King was attending: "Ben, make sure you play "Take my hand precious Lord" in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty." The events following the shooting have been disputed, as some people have accused Jackson of exaggerating Kings last words.
