On 01 May 1970 he sent in US Ground Forces into the neutral country of Cambodia, to destroy COSVN (enemy Central Office S. Vietnam) & enemy supplies. This action resulted in the Kent State Shooting in Ohio 04 May 1970. In 1971, he ordered the invasion of Laos, Operation Lam Son 719 (1971, highway (route) 9), to further disrupt enemy troops & supplies. This action, was a near (close call) disaster for allied forces. President Nixon, believed in former US Air Force, Chief of Staff (1961-1965), General Curtis E. Lemay's word's, when referring to North Vietnam, in 1965; "...They've got to draw in their horns and stop their aggression, or WE'RE GOING TO BOMB THEM BACK INTO THE STONE AGE!" (With the B-52 Stratofortress in mind). President Nixon's "Big Stick" was his B-52's. In 1972, he employed them, with orders for a "maximum effort", during the aerial campaigns designated Linebacker & Linebacker II. Of which the Linebacker II air campaign has been dubbed the "Christmas Bombings" of 1972, by historians.

He intensified the war with maximum effort B52 bombing campaigns over North Vietnam in 1972; Operations Linebacker & Linebacker II (nick named the Christmas bombings). He invaded (incursion) Cambodia on 01 May 1970 (which had the side effect of the Kent State University Shootings on 04 May 1970). He invaded Laos 1971, Operation Lam Son 719; US Army's last major offensive of the war, ARVN's went into Laos, US forces fought along the borders (after Cambodia, Congress put a leash on him, which restricted his Laos campaign with US troops). These campaigns were designed to weaken the North, so when we pulled out, the ARVN could handle his cousin to the North. He had secretly negotiated with the Soviet Union (Russia) & Red China to not interfere (not to get involved) with the war after he escalated it; they, knowing his plan, agreed (if they hadn't agreed, none of the above could have occurred). Finally, he negotiated to get all of our POWs back from North Vietnam, mostly US Airmen who had been shot down over the years. After the intensified offensives, the return of our Prisoners of War; we went home.
