His rulership was so short that he spent most of the time subduing the vast area of the Persian Empire from Libya to today's Pakistan.

The Persian Empire had been comparatively stable and peaceful, with economic and social advances. Alexander's aim was to introduce the Greek model of the city-state which could promote his own view of what was civilised. The problem was that the population and economy was largely rural, and so the city model would leave most of the population untouched.

Alexander's successors continued on this idea, but the result was and remained that a small percentage Hellenised - adopted Greek (Hellenic) culture - and the remainder kept their own local culture. So the best which could be said is that Alexander started a Hellenisation programme which spread as a veneer over the existing cultures, and contracted as other cultures (eg Islam) moved in as the centuries passed.
