I believe that the turning of the USSR from an ally to a competitor was inevitable and not neccisarily due to any specific event(s) (though there are many that helped tensions between the US and the USSR). USSR had a communist government, meaning that there was a monopoly of everything (with the government in ownership) and that no matter how well you do at something, everyone will receive the same pay and benefits. This is the opposite of the US's capitalistic views in which those who work harder will reep the better pay and benefits.
Communist USSR also believed in Atheism (as franlky supported by Stalin) which was an horrific thought to a very religious US. The USSR also publicly came out and said that they wished to take over the world with communism.
The US and the USSR have governments on virtually opposite sides of the spectrum thus putting us as natural enemies. The US and USSR, though "allies", werer never "friends"; we were simply united against a greater "evil" (ie Hitler and the Nazi's)
