In 1919 World War I was over and a peace conference opened in Versailles, France. Then again, in Paris President Wilson helped form the League of Nations.
Theodore Roosevelt (26th President of the United States) ended his time on earth by dying in his sleep at the age of 60. The 18th amendment was ratified by Congress. This amendment was an effort to reduce the rampant effect of alcohol used by returning men from the war. Alcohol consumption had soared as men fought with their conscience on what they had seen. In a way, the people of this era, though brilliant, was still influenced by the mannerisms inherited from the 19th century. This ratification prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of Alcoholic Beverages for consumption. Although this is little known, this was the beginning of Prohibition. This led to the formation of clubs and bars where alcohol could be consumed and this in turn lead to the gangster era which was to last until 1933 when Prohibition ended. Men in cities such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles seized this opportunity to flex their muscles and extortion was a high price to pay. Another thing that is relatively unknown is that this was the year when the Irish War of Independence began. Though these people have yet to achieve their aim, they must realize that their dependence on Great Britain is too great. In a maritime disaster, His Majesty's Ship Iolaire sank near Scotland killing 206 people. Volcano Kelut erupted killing about 16,000 people. In cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Boston staples were stored in mass quantities for distribution to the masses. One such tank in Boston gave way killing 21 people and injuring 150 others. In Chicago the Black Sox scandal erupted where several White Sox players, including 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson, were banned for life from major league baseball for fixing games. Shoeless had gotten his name when, in his younger days, he was rounding third and heading for home when he lost a shoe crossing home plate 'shoeless'. Last but not least, Einstein's theory of general relativity was tested and confirmed. As no other alternative theories had yet appeared, it was assumed Einstein was correct.
