The French used "a common Latin origin" to justify their temporary occupation of Mexico. Napoleon III placed Maximilian Habsburg on the throne as Emperor of Mexico with the justification that both France and Iberia had been settled by Latins, and that a common ancestry gave the French the right to intercede on behalf of Mexican politics.

Of course, the Mexican people had the Emperor killed as soon as they could, so.

Central America (generally considered to be composed of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama) is simply a regional name for part of what is called Latin America.

The primary European languages in the region - Spanish, Portuguese (and French) are derived from Latin.

The term "Latin America" was coined in the 1860s when the French Emperor Napoleon III was trying to extend French imperial control over Mexico. He and his ministers used the term to try to suggest at least some degree of cultural similarity throughout the region and with France.

Most of the countries located within these regions have Spanish or Portuguese as main language; hence this region is known as Latin America -- meaning their languages are derived from ancient Latin. Also, most of these countries are inhabited by a mix of European, African and Native american people. Finally, these countries have Roman Catholicism as main religion.

Besides that, each country within the region has its particular traditions and culture.
