At two year institutions there are degrees that are designed to transfer to four year colleges and universities, where the student would just need an additional two years to complete a degree particular to a specific program of study (major). The transfer degrees are the associate in arts (AA), and the associate in science (AS). There are other degrees that are in the associate of applied science (AAS) area. Some of these programs were not designed to transfer to four year institutions, but were designed to give the student all the expertise necessary to enter the workforce in a specific occupation immediately after completion of the degree. These degrees are typically referred to as terminal degrees. However, not all AAS degrees are terminal degrees. You would have to check with the transfer counselor at the two year institution for appropriate direction.

You have to be careful with the associate in applied science degrees, some can transfer well while others do not and are considered terminal degrees.
