What is causing a 1986 4x4 Diesel Suburban to lose power as if in neutral until brought to a stop and driven in 4WLow for a while then shifted back to 2W or 4WHigh?

well im not an expert but it sounds like the hydralic brake booster is sucking power from from the motor possibly due to a malfunction in the booster or a clog in a line i believe the booster requires 12-15hp to operate, an alternator 10hp and all your accserories add up if one requires more your motor will lag down, as for having to be in 4low im guessing because the engine in 4low it has enough low gearing that it doesnt require much hp to move it so the "excess"/unused hp is being put to the booster where it bluids pressure till u use it enough to drain it again, that's what i think but im just a self trained mechanic in college so i may be wrong but it may help start u off

yes, it will. i had a problem with my ignition and timing, and my transmission shifted like crap. hard shifts, delays, pounding, you name it. i would think it has to do with the way its equalized in the drivetrain. once i fixed the problems, it shifted as smooth as new.

your truck will not go anywhere if the transmission is in neutral, it shouldn't if you are on level ground, by putting the transfer case in neutral you are putting the transmission in neutral which is not a gear
