Instant messaging or IM is a real-time, usually text-based system where messages are sent to other users on the system. This can be one-to-one or one-to-many. One-to-many systems are often called chatrooms. There are several competing, mostly incompatible instant messaging systems out there. These often allow one-to-one text chat but can also allow file transfer such as sending pictures, sounds and other files; voice calls and even video calls in some cases using a mic or webcam. The oldest IM system is IRC or internet Relay Chat it consists of many networks such as EFNet, IRCNet, Undernet, QuakeNet and is primarily text-based mostly in chatrooms called channels. The same client can connect to any one of these networks, the most common Windows client being mIRC although other clients exist. IRC also allows for direct connections between users for chat and file transfers as well as private and in-channel messaging through the IRC network. Voice and video chat is not supported, although sounds, pictures and videos can be transferred as files through IRC. Other popular IM systems include Windows Live Messenger (more commonly known as MSN Messenger or simply MSN), AOL Instant Messenger (AKA AIM), ICQ, Google Talk, Yahoo Instant Messenger and Skype. Each of these allow mostly for one-to-one chatting between contacts and may also allow for voice and video calling, group chats, games and other features. Each of these systems requires their own messaging client, meaning that if you want to access more than one network then you need to run more than one program. Clients that allow access to more than one of these networks are out there, such as Trillian, Pidgin and Miranda although these networks only allows for basic text chat features and may allow for voice depending on the client. Also, the companies running the networks (AOL, Yahoo etc) have been known to actively block these clients in the past.
