Florida is the southernmost of the "contiguous" (lower 48) states of the US. It is also the southernmost of the continental states. Only Hawaii, in the Pacific Ocean is farther south.

First, contiguous generally means together, in one place, linked as one "continual" land mass without any other countries in between. Therefore, in the question posted, it is not needed to say "excluding Alaska and Hawaii" because those two states are separated from the "contiguous United States". It is actually on a peninsula called the Northwest Angle, extending from Canada into the Lake of the Woods, just north of Muskeg Bay.
