First, contiguous generally means together, in one place, linked as one "continual" land mass without any other countries in between. Therefore, in the question posted, it is not needed to say "excluding Alaska and Hawaii" because those two states are separated from the "contiguous United States". The main body of the US with Hawaii and Alaska included is often referred to as The Continental United States.

Second, many people believe, incorrectly, that the the northernmost point in the 48 contigious US is Maine. It is NOT. The northernmost part of Maine does not even come close to the 48th line of latitude, through which five states almost penetrate: the States of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

But, the northernmost state in the 48 contiguous states is Minnesota. In Minnesota, the Northwest Angle extends above the 49th parallel on the Lake of the Woods, near 49° 23' N, 95.1° W. Minnesota, however, has one small section North of this line. It is the Red Lake Indian Reservation. It is actually on a peninsula called the Northwest Angle, extending from Canada into the Lake of the Woods, just north of Muskeg Bay.

I believe the answer is one of these three:

The Southernmost point of the continental United States is Key West, Florida (24 degrees latitude).

The Southernmost point in Hawaii is near Nahelu, in the island of Hawaii (18.5 degrees latitude).

The Southernmost point in Puerto Rico is Bahia de Jobos (18.15 degrees latitude).

Please see the links for details.
