What is the clunk that can be heard from the front when steering wheel is first turned either way after the car has been sitting overnight?

Cars have a "U" joint in the steering shaft and that is probably dry causing the noise. It won't hurt anything dry but you can lube it by taking it apart if you want to. Would this dry "U" joint on the steering shaft make noise ALL THE TIME, or only upon first turn of the steering wheel?
