Also known as El Adelantaeo and El Viejo, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was a Spanish navigator who crossed the Pacific Ocean from New Spain in modern-day Mexico, and founded Cebu on the Philippine islands in 1565. He was the first Governor-General of the Spanish East Indies, which included the Philippines, Guam, and the Marianas Islands. He obtained peace with indigenous tribes and made Manila the capital of the Spanish East Indies in 1571. Legazpi City, the capital of Albay, is named for him.
