No snake is poisonous. Even venomous snakes are not poisonous. Rattlesnake meat is quite tasty and you can find it in some stores. You can eat any snake without ill effects.

There are poisonous turtles, however. The common Box turtle is able to concentrate the alkaloid toxins from the mushrooms it eats in its tissues. If you eat box turtle meat you will likely be poisoned.

In the U.S.- well then yes the above statement holds true, minus its size. Agkistrodon piscivoru, or the water moccasin is the most venomous snake in the US. Most adults grow to about 32 inches, some may grow up to 71inches. Females are smaller then the males. Moccasins produce a hemotoxic venom and it is rich with tissue-destructive enzymes.

In the world- that would belong to the belcher's sea snake or the beaded sea snake. It is also arguably the worlds most venomous snake. Some herpetologist would say either the beaked sea snake(enhydrina schistosa) or the fierce snake aka the inland taipan (oxyuranus microlepidotus).

Thus, the black mamba is very often considered the most dangerous snake in the world (probably correctly), but is not the most venomous.

Belcher's sea snake is the most deadlist snake known to mankind. The most venomous snake known in the world, a few milligrams is strong enough to kill 1000 people! Less than 1/4 of bites will contain venom, and they are relatively docile. Fisherman are usually the victims of these bites, as they encounter the species when they pull nets from the ocean. Found throughout waters off South East Asia and Northern Australia.
