There are two forms of smallpox; Variola Major and Variola Minor. The first was fatal in up to 30% of infected people, the second in about 1% of infected people.

What are cures for cowpox?

Usually, it is a cowpox vaccine, which is usually composed of a dead or dying/weak cowpox unit. This alerts your immune system, so that if you ever get it, your body will recognize it and fight it away.

How do you stop smallpox?

A man noticed how milkmaids did not get affected by smallpox, so they assumed that it was something to do with cows or milk that stopped them catching smallpox. I turns out that it was a similair, but less deadly, virus called cowpox that was preventing milkmaids getting smallpox. Cowpox was a vaccine against smallpox - meaning if you have had cowpox, you can't get smallpox.

Who discovered that people who contracted cowpox did not contract smallpox?

in 1796, a man named Edward Jenner said this and everyone thought he was crazy but he was right. He took a dairy maid who had cowpox (she had a pustule on her hand), took the puss and sliced open a little boys arm and infected him with cowpox. Then he put smallpox puss in the cut and the boy didn't get it.in 1796, a man named Edward Jenner said this and everyone thought he was crazy but he was right. Do animals get smallpox?

The reason we were able to "erradicate" (said that way because we have stores in labs) smallpox was because the human serotype is only able to affect humans. The smallpox vaccine is made from cowpox, which is similar enough to smallpox to provide immunity, but cannot infect us.

How did edward jenner know that the smallpox vaccine would work?

He didn't know it would work, that is why he tested it for both safety & effectiveness.Safety, his cowpox pus based inoculation caused fewer and milder symptoms than the existing smallpox pus based inoculation, also it produced no cases of smallpox a common problem of the existing inoculation.Effectiveness, when vaccinated a person was later exposed to smallpox and did not catch it.Note: vaccina is Latin for cow.

What did Edward Jenner do to stop illnesses getting worse?

Edward Jenner made a vaccicn that help people with smallpox Edward Jenner spoted that people who had cowpox could not get smallpox James phipps was the first person the be vaccinated by a weak form of cowpox

What did eward jenner discover about the relationship between smallpox and cowpox?

cowpox gives immunity to smallpox. Jenner observed that people who worked with cattle and contracted cowpox from them.

Did dairymaids caught cowpox and then smallpox?

yes

How was the smallpox vaccine invented?

Dr Edward Jenner injected small boy who had smallpox with cowpox, after hearing from a dairy maid that people who got cowpox would not get smallpox. This worked and that's how vaccination came about.

Why the milkmaids did not get infected with smallpox?

Well, I think it is the case that cowpox is just a lesser, bovine version of smallpox. Milk maids would get cowpox simply because they were exposed to cattle constantly, much more than the average person, who was more likely to get smallpox than cowcox. A scientist called Edward Jenner observed that milk maids, who often got cowpox, never seemed to get smallpox. This was because milk maids would develop immunity to cowpox (and therefore smallpox) once they had fallen ill and recovered from cowpox. He then tested this theory on a young boy. He did this by injecting cowpox into the boy's blood stream; the boy then fell ill with cowpox. After the boy recovered from cowpox, the scientist then injected him with the life-threatening disease smallpox. The result proved his theory right; the injection of smallpox into the boy's bloodstream had had no effect on him, because his body had developed immunity to the disease. If you wish to learn more about vaccination and immunities, then research antibodies, antigens and vaccination and the way in which they all work.

What other diseases can potentially be mistaken for smallpox?

Cowpox. Edward Jenner inoculated a boy with cowpox in early discovery of smallpox vaccine, it is part of the Vaccinia virus family

Why did the cowpox antibodies prevent people from getting smallpox as well?

Cowpox was a less harmful version of smallpox. So their bodies created antibodies for the cowpox which in turn could kill the smallpox cells.

Who developed a vaccination for smallpox?

Louis PasteurEdward Jenner found that people who contracted the cowpox virus didn't contract smallpox so he tested it out on a farmer's son who had contracted smallpox that week and he applied the liquid inside a cowpox sore to a cut and then after he healed from cowpox, he injected the liquid from a smallpox sore and the boy didn't contract smallpox.Which is how he found the vaccine...Note: Developed not invented

Who can get cowpox?

Cowpox is a virus that causes blisters, similar to smallpox. It was most commonly seen in 'milk maids' - young female workers that milked dairy cows for a living - so it was called cowpox. In the 1800s, a physician noted that milk maids who had recovered from cowpox did not contract smallpox, and the first vaccine was developed.

Who was the inventor of the vaccine against smallpox and concluded that a person inflicted with cowpox disease will not be inflicted anymore by smallpox?

An English doctor by the name of Edward Jenner. He noticed that milkmaids got cowpox which was similar to smallpox, but much milder, and after a milkmaid had had cowpox, she did not get smallpox. So Dr Jenner tried to scratch the skin of volunteers with a needle dipped in to cowpox germs. The volunteer got a transient mild illness and did not get smallpox after vaccination. When Dr Jenner's vaccine was shown to be so effective, vaccination against smallpox became compulsory. Smallpox is now almost entirely eradicated and most counties stopped making smallpox vaccination compulsory in the late 70s and early 80s.
