What is the purpose of making the pilgrimage to Mecca?

The purpose is to fulfill the duty Allah has commanded all to fulfill. The Hajj, or pilgrimage is the fifth principle, or pillar of Islam, and is undertaken to commemorate Ibrahim and his family, who founded Makkah (Mecca). If Muslims have the halal money, and are competent to make the journey, they must make the pilgrimage to Mecca. The money cannot be haraam. Meaning it can't be gained through immoral means, such as lottery, stripping, bar-tending, etc.

A Different Perspective:

To pray at the site of the Ka'Bah. Pilgrimage is ordered in Qur'an (2,196 and in other verses places, also). It says 'Do it for Allah, without missing any single supposition.'

Muslim people really love Mohammed. They want to see where he lived, where he prayed and so on.

Another Perspective:

It is meant to be a cleansing and worshiping trip. You go to different Holy Sites and worship Allah in Ka'Bah. If a Muslim cannot afford it, they do not have to go. The main point of the trip is to cleanse themselves and to become closer to Islam and Allah. Muslims are supposed to let go of their past and start a new, fresh life.

Another Perspective:

Muslims believe that Ibrahim (Abraham, in Judaism and Christianity) is the father of monotheism. And many prophets were his descendants. He is an agent of change. A person who can stand for the Truth in front of a tyrant. Even fire turned cold in the face of his steadiness.

It is a way of tracing back the journey that was taken by Ibrahim and his family (Hagar, the wife, and Ismail the son) in completing God's will without complaining. During the pilgrimage, Muslims contemplate upon, and take lessons from, the family of Ibrahim.

The energy generated during the procession will be taken home, and the Hajj will then be an agent of change in the family and all in its vicinity.
