Connecticut is a state rich with Natural Resources. There are many prominent geographical features found throughout the state and, as a result, there is a great deal of diversity in terms of habitat, landscapes, plant and animal life. Connecticut's most prominent natural feature is Long Island Sound. Spanning the entire southern coastline of Connecticut, the Sound supports a diverse commercial and recreational fishery, provides for a wide array of recreational opportunities, and millions of people live along its shores in both Connecticut and New York. Other prominent natural features include the Litchfield Hills (part of the Appalachian Trail) and the Connecticut River Valley. Throughout these areas and throughout the entire state there exists an abundance of wildlife that provide for outstanding recreational opportunities, whether it be passive or active recreation. It is the mission of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to protect and preserve these natural areas and manage the state's natural resources. This mission is accomplished through a variety of efforts including the acquisition of open space, restoration of habitats, watershed initiatives, monitoring, and regulated game management seasons.
