The colonies were obtained by mainly English expansion westwards from the 16th century onwards. Colonies were established during the reign of Elizabeth 1 - hence the name Virginia - but they failed. Colonisation expanded rapidly (and brutally) during the 17th. As territory was taken from indigenous peoples they became colonies in their own right based on English customs and laws. In short, they were stolen.
The Middle Colonies, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware, made up the middle region of the original thirteen colonies. New York and New Jersey were originally Dutch, but later taken by the British. Pennsylvania and Delaware were both founded by William Penn.
There is no suck thing as new Sweden so it was never taken to begin with.
The Swedish settlements in what is now the US were taken by the Netherlands during the Second Northern War, and was made part of New Netherlands. It was later relinquished to the English.
Most of the early English colonies were financed by English merchants. In most cases these colonies were taken over by foreigners.
New Sweden was Sweden's only colony on mainland North America and survived for almost 20 years before being taken over by the Dutch. Sweden also held two Caribbean colonies: Saint Barthélemy and Guadeloupe. Saint Barthélemy was under Swedish control for almost 100 years, but was exchanged to the French. Guadeloupe was under Swedish control for about a year, then was taken back by the British, in which it was also taken by the French.
That would have been New Amsterdam. Established by the Dutch on what is now Manhatten. The English renamed it New York.
New York was one of the original 13 colonies because it was originally settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century but was later taken over by the English in 1664. The English established New York as an English colony and it played a key role in the development of the American colonies before the Revolutionary War.
The first colony founded was Virginia in 1624. It became the first of the Britain's 13 colonies and became a state in 1788, twelve years after the independence of the US. Of the original thirteen colonies that would eventually become states, the first colony established was New Netherland by the Dutch in 1614. It came under British control 1665 and became the colony of New York. The first state to join the Union was Delaware. It became a state in 1787, but was founded by Sweden in 1638, taken over by the Dutch in 1655, and taken over by the British in 1664.
Britain was once an imperial power that established colonies in many places around the world. Even after they left white English-speaking people were often the dominant members of the societies formed from some of these colonies. In other cases, such as India, English became the common language for peoples in the same country who did not speak a common indigenous language. The fact that United States has taken over as the world's superpower, and that it's de facto official language is English, has given the people of other countries even more incentive to learn the language.
It was taken by New York, but it was part of present day New York and possibly Connecticut.
During this time of English colonies, The English were in a war with France( they lost) to repay all the debts taken to fund the war, the English taxed imported goods. To get a quick history lesson short, the colonist didn't like the taxes (cause they weren't low) and began a sereis of boycotts and movements
