A mercenary fought for who ever paid the most, even to the extent of switching sides halfway through a battle. Not only that mercenaries were notoriously difficult to control, they would loot and pillage as well. Where as a Knight owed service to his lord, were easier to control at times, and lived by a code of honour.

A samurai was a male born into the Japanese warrior caste, and trained in, among other things, the Martial Arts of Japan (including weapons) and bushido, the Shinto-based Code of Honor of Japan at the time. Legitimate samurai reported to a daimyo (local king) or other nobility in the Japanese feudal hierarchy. Samurai particularly skilled in stealth and night-work (like today's Special Forces) were ninja; samurai unattached to a feudal overlord were ronin; neither had a good reputation in Japanese society (vs. the admiration of modern fantasy game role-players).

A knight was a male, born (usually) into European nobility, who trained in, among other things, the martial arts of the time and place (primarily weaponry) and Chivalry, the Christianity-based Code of Honor of Europe, but did not achieve the rank (i.e., Sir) until/unless promoted to it by a feudal overlord, which in some instances was the king or emperor, but usually someone a bit further down on the feudal food chain.

Generally, both knights (usually) and samurai (often) had responsibility for their own pieces of land (portions of their overlord's land), and had to pay their overlord in both (agricultural) goods and (military) service.

The medieval meaning of the word squire was simply a 'knight in training'... it was the stage after being a page on the way to becoming a knight. They served an existing knight as an attendant or shield carrier.

Nothing. They were the same person. To be a knight you had to be a noble.

But not all nobles went in battle.
