Evolutionary ethologists don't think there was one dog. Dog's evolved from wolves, but wolves like dogs also have many breeds. Various breeds of dogs have evolved from the different types of wolves.

The table below outlines all the different groups of dogs and where they came from. Progenitor means 'evolved into'. We're not sure how long ago this all was, but dogs were first domesticated around 14,000 years ago.

Clutten-Brock, J. (1999). A natural history of domesticated mammals. Cambridge University Press.

Name Progenitor

1.Canis lupus chanco (small Chinese wolf) > Early Chinese and Mongolian Dogs

2.Canis lupus lycaon (large Northern wolf) > Eskimo breed of spitz type

3.Canis lupus Arabs (small western Asiatic wolf)

>European and Southern Asiatic Dogs

>Canis familiaris metris-optimae (Shepard dogs)

>Canis familiaris inostranzewi (Northern Indian moloses)

>Canis familiaris intermedius (braques)

>Canis familiaris leineri (harriers)

The first dogs are believed to have been bred from wolves, so they would have been verly like wolves in appearance.

In fact, the change from one species to another is so gradual that it is hard to say exactly when the new one has 'emerged'.

The first horses, Prezwalskis (unsure of spelling) were ponylike and shaggy, usually duns, with small eyes and a dorsal stripe. Their manes were short like a Zebra's. Andalusiangirl.

The very first Dobermanns were heavy and wide - similar to a Rottweiler. Greyhound and Manchester Terrier blood was then added to produce the slim and attractive breed we see today.

It was likely the wolf, though there seems to be some obscurity in history.
