In 1770 James Cook claimed the whole of the easternseaboard of the continent, naming it New South Wales. The Western half of the continent was still named New Holland (the original designation by the Dutch), remaining unclaimed by the British until 1826, when Edmund Lockyer made an official claim on Britain's behalf.

Australia was originally a British penal colony, which meant that prisoners were sent there to serve sentences of 7 years, 14 years or "the term of his natiral life".

Australia was never a single British colony, but rather six separate colonies. These colonies became states which federated in 1901, coming together as the Commonwealth of Australia.
