The term, The First World War, was invented by the author of a book with that title in 1933. The term, World War 1, was invented by Time Magazine in 1939. The publishers of these works allowed the author's descriptions to define the phrase, World War.

Formal definitions (descriptions) now abound, not all of which are in strict agreement with one another. So, to understand the definition of world war, the event, itself, must be understood. When it is, the definition of the term, world war, will be complete.

Related Information:

The concept, or idea of a world war goes back to the first decade of the 20th century. It was an idea that was developed in an environment of fear. Countries and people all over the world were worried that a European conflict would involve the entire world.

The idea grew along with the fear until 1914, with the Austro-Hungarian Empire's invasion of Serbia. By the end of 1914, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and others were fighting. All the colonies of these parties became embroiled as well. Through the course of the war, more countries and more territory became involved in the conflict. Then, in 1917, with Russia forced to leave the field because of its own civil war, the US entered the war. Suddenly the Western Hemisphere, and by this time, all the major powers of the world were at war. The notion of a global conflict, now went unchallenged. Worst fears had been realized.

The fact preceded the definition. The definition was simply an explanation of the fact that all the major powers and a large portion of the world's land masses were, in one way or another, involved in the Great War (World War 1).

This was the war that was to end all war.

There were world wide conflicts, in terms of land mass, prior to World War 1. They were thought of, and described, in terms of the nationalities of the major combatants. The fact that they were fought over wide spread territories did not, at the time, and lacking the element of fear, factor into the lexicon of those who were fighting, observing, or reporting on these wars.

Normally when war is being fought in all of the oceans on earth, and on most of the nations around the world.

Most of WW1 (1914-1918) was fought in Europe, but many of the main nations on earth were present there to help fight it. However, naval warfare was conducted during WW1 in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as off the coasts of Northwest South America and Southeast South America. So technically, fighting was world wide.

The Korean War (1950-1953) was just like WW1; nearly every major nation on earth was present in Korea to fight the war. However, unlike WW1, combat seldom if ever left the region immediately surrounding Korea.

WW2 was the closest man has come to having a truly global war. Even the continental United States was hit by enemy fire: Brookings Oregon was bombed by a Japanese Airplane launched from a submarine; and Santa Barbara California was shelled by a Japanese Submarine's deck gun.

-------

Well WWI wasn't originally called "World War" but was "The Great War" because it was a war between all the major powers at the time. It was a truly global war because fighting took place throughout the globe; for instance the Japanese and a combined European force took the German colony of Tsingtao in China; German cruisers fought British ships at Coronel and in the Falklands; and German forces fought against the British in East Africa for the duration of the war. Also, the Ottoman Empire fought the French and British (and Russians) in the Middle East.

There is no one naming convention for what constitutes a world war, but typically the number of nations involved and widespread fighting are what make up a world war. Both the aptly named world wars of the twentieth century fit this bill. Other wars that could be included in this category are the Seven Years War, The Napoleonic Wars, and to some extent the current War Against Radical Islam.

There is not a person who determines there is a world war. The United Nations monitors wars now. They do try to help warring parties to obtain peace. Their mission is to prevent world wars from happening. World Wars occur when many nations around the globe war at the same time for similar reasons. it is not like they all decide to have a World War. It builds up into one as what happened in World War 1 and 2.

The UN can only do so much. They can't control any nation(s) that withdraw except for blockading their trade routes to other countries but cannot stop inside producing unless war is declared,so a big nation like Russia could produce a 100,000,000 man army right under the noses of the UN.They cannot stop World Wars from happening if the aggressor withdraws and they get like 10 nations to withdraw too.If a World War happens, they might as well go run home to mama cause the UN cannot fight wars, only defend disputed nations, sooner or later America will get invaded by a rebel nations that's not in the UN and America will fall like rome.
