it's the pully, right next to the Power Steering pump pully, there are two pully's that look like a small school bell, they are in the middle. The one on the left is the tensioner. You need to get a socket that fits in there and pull it to the right,to get the slack. It's best to take the washer fluid/coolant box out for more room,it's only three little bolts.
If your wanting to get right at the tensioner, unbolt the bell pully, and under it is the plate,it takes an allen key to get it off,and when the plate is removed you will get at the spring.
Hope this helps.
Loosen the tensioner pulley on your 1988 Chevrolet Corsica. When the tensioner pulley is loose the serpentine belt will easily come off. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten the tensioner pulley.
The belt tensioner on a 91 Corsica 2.2L with an aftermarket AC is replaced by loosening the retaining bolt and pushing the tensioner to the side. The belt can then be taken off, the tensioner removed, and a new one bolted into position.
Turn the Tensioner bolt clockwise (to the right)and the tensioner itself will move causing slack in the belt.
just replace the engine with a 4 or 6 cylinder and your done.
Put the new serpentine belt on to your 1992 Chevy Corsica pulleys. Push the tensioner pulley to the left to tighten the serpentine belt.
Usualy the tensioner or idler pulley is spring loaded and can be pulled backwards allowing enough slack for the belt to slip on easily On a 1992-1996 Beretta/Corsica, the upper engine mount needs to be removed in order to remove/replace the serpentine belt. Replace the belt, and reinstall the engine mount.
Open the hood and look. If it has a serpentine belt there is a tensioner.
if it's a six cylinder au falcon, the belt should tension itself because the six cylider engine has an automatic tensioner.
you have to remove the belt tensioner to remove the belt off of the engine.
Remove surpentine belt, then take out bolt that goes through tensioner to engine.
Most of them move some but if your belt is squeeling you probably need to replace the tensioner.
on a 96 (3.1 V6) it's a side mount it is on the passenger side of the car on the side of the engine, very close to the fender. the tensioner wheel will accept either an open end wrench or a 1/2 inch or larger pull bar. You will need a pull bar to change the tensioner or the belt, you can rent them from many autoparts stores.
