Best Answer

Dolly was a cloned sheep, and the first mammal to be successfully cloned. She was created at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. The cell from which she was cloned was taken from a six year old ewe. Dolly was born on 5 July 1996, but scientists did not announce her birth until February 22 the following year. The cloning technique used in the creation of Dolly was somatic cell nuclear transfer, in which the nucleus from one of the donor's non-reproductive cells is placed into a de-nucleated embryonic cell and coaxed into developing into a foetus.

The first mammal successfully cloned sheep. Dolly was born in 1996 in Scotland as the result of work by biologist Ian Wilmut. The procedure that produced Dolly involved removing the nucleusfrom an ovumcelland placing the nucleus of an adult sheep's mammary cell into it. Further manipulations caused the egg to "turn on" all geneand develop like a normal zygote.

Dolly lived for her entire life at the Roslin Institute. There she was bred with a Welsh Mountain ram and produced six lambs in total. Her first lamb called Bonnie, was born in April 1998. The next year Dolly produced twin lambs Sally and Rosie, and she gave birth to triplets Lucy, Darcy and Cotton in the year after that. In the autumn of 2001, at the age of five, Dolly developed Arthritis and began to walk stiffly, but this was successfully treated with anti-inflamitory drugs. Dolly died at age 6 meaning she died around 5 to 6 years before most sheeps...means they failed at there experiment

Dolly the sheep was the first clone which was cloned by enucleating a cell, unlike the previous method where instead of receiving a clone of a living person or animal, identical twins are born.
