Iraq was invaded as the part of geopolitical project "spread of democracy" that suppose to insure US dominance in the region and the world by destroying independent centers of power.

ANSWER
It was an attempt by the coalition forces to provide a buffer betwween the weaponry, money and mujahideen flowing from Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan. Although the king of Saudi Arabia is very friendly with us, not all of the 1000+ princes are, and due to the complex political situation, it was difficult and dangerous for him too shut the princes supporting taliban and al qaeda forces down. The invasion of Iraq, combined with the fact that we had troops stationed in Yemen, Oman, The United Arab Emirates and Qatar, gave him an excuse to shut many of these princes down, without seeming like he was doing it too support the U.S., and making more enemies. Imagine the most complex, and convoluted political system there can be, filled with back-stabbers, and twisted sycophants. That is Saudi Arabia's political system, and even a king must tread carefully there.
