The inability to obtain the release of the Americans held hostage in Iran resulted in an overall decline in American self-confidence, as well as confidence in the US government, and contributed to Jimmy Carter's loss to Ronald Reagan and the consequent conservative turn of the US during the Reagan Administration. The failed rescue attempts raised questions about the competance of the US government and military, encouraging others in the international community to oppose US activities and decreasing the net power of US on issues requiring international agreement and cooperation.
