The Japanese invasion on Manchuria and China were in large part to sequre additional strategic resources. The Japanese had imperialistic aggressive intentions to set up a Japanese empire in Asia and this needs oil. When the united states stopped trading oil with the Japanese in their mind they had no choice but to effectively immediately open hostilities to seize oil fields in Indonesia along with various other resources.
